Winter Brewing Challenge: Embrace the Season with Bluestone Yeast

Winter is a fantastic time for brewing beers that are hearty, warming, and perfectly suited for the colder months. Here are five beer styles that are particularly well-suited for brewing in winter (June, July, August in Australia):

  1. Stout: Rich, dark, and full-bodied, stouts provide a comforting and robust experience during winter. With flavours of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee, stouts are perfect for chilly evenings by the fireplace. Whether it’s an Irish Dry Stout, a Milk Stout, or an Imperial Stout, brewing a stout in winter is a classic choice. Suggested Bluestone Yeast (BSY-A010 San Diego or BSY-A029 London)
  2. Porter: Similar to stouts, porters are dark beers with flavours of roasted malt, chocolate, and caramel. Porters offer a slightly lighter body compared to stouts, making them a versatile option for winter brewing. Experiment with variations such as Baltic Porter or Robust Porter to explore different flavour profiles. (BSY-A010 San Diego or BSY-A011 New England or BSY-A029 London)
  3. Belgian Dubbel: Belgian Dubbels are rich, malty beers with notes of dark fruits, caramel, and spices. They have a warming quality that makes them an ideal choice for winter brewing. The yeast strains used in Belgian Dubbels can produce complex flavours and aromas, adding an extra layer of depth to the beer. (BSY-A005 Brussels or BSY-A006 Antwerp)
  4. Winter Warmer: As the name suggests, Winter Warmers are specifically brewed for the colder months. These beers are typically strong, malty, and often feature spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves. Winter Warmers provide a comforting warmth and are perfect for festive occasions and gatherings during the winter season. (BSY-A010 San Diego or BSY-A011 New England or BSY-A012 Michigan)
  5. Barleywine: Barleywines are bold, high-alcohol beers with rich malt flavours and a significant hop presence. They often have a full body, complex malt profile, and can age gracefully over time. Barleywines are excellent choices for long winter evenings when you can savour their depth and complexity. (BSY-A010 San Diego or BSY-A012 Michigan)

It’s worth noting that brewing these styles requires attention to fermentation temperature control, as the colder ambient temperatures in winter can impact yeast activity. Ensure you have the means to maintain proper fermentation conditions to achieve the desired flavours and aromas.

Bluestone Yeast Challenge

We have an exciting challenge for all the homebrewers out there! We want to see how our Bluestone yeast strains can transform your winter brews. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Pick a Style: Choose one of the winter beer styles mentioned above. (but not limited to these)
  2. Brew Twice or Team up: Brew the same beer style twice, each time using a different Bluestone yeast strain. This will help you discover how yeast imparts flavour. Or grab a mate and have them brew the same style but with a different yeast strain. This way, you can compare and contrast the results.
  3. Share Your Brew: Post a picture of your brew on social media and a picture of which yeast strains you used. Don’t forget to tag us and use the hashtag #bsywinterbeerchallenge!
  4. Win a Prize: Every month, we’ll randomly select one post to win a special prize. It’s our way of saying thank you for being a part of the Bluestone brewing community.

Remember to keep all posts respectful and appropriate. Let’s keep the community friendly and fun for everyone!

Not sure your brewing system is up to the job. Don’t stress grab a fresh wort kit, such as the ones from Grain and Grape. Yes, John Preston has retired but Will and the team from Keg King have kept the wort kits flowing. https://www.kegking.com.au/fresh-wort-kits.html

Embrace the Winter Spirit

Brewing these beer styles in winter allows you to embrace the season’s cozy atmosphere and enjoy the rewarding process of crafting beers that are well-suited for the colder months. So, grab your brewing equipment, embrace the winter spirit, and create beers that will warm both body and soul. And remember to share your beer with friends and family, as everyone loves free beer!!

Happy brewing!
